Hi all!  I have purchased the E3 electroforming and electroetching system from sherri haab in the states.  However, they cannot send the environmentally solutions they have over the border. Rio can but at an absolutely exorbitant cost.  Does anyone know where I can purchase similar solutions for silver and copper electroforming (and electroetching) in Canada? I have had no luck at all!

Thank you so much for your help

Hi Wendy, I'm not sure if this'll help or not, but Stuller in Toronto is who I've been getting Clean Earth solutions from.  They don't have the hazardous shipping charges, and Stuller does the transit from Lafayette to Toronto (so I'm really really loyal to them for saving me from the "unexpected" brokerage charges!) which saves a lot of extra shipping charges.   I've not ordered from Gesswein Canada so I'm not sure if they could help or not, but it might be worth a call.

Hope that helps,

Tim

Thanks for answering Wendy's question Tim.  I am in exactly the same situation and will contact Stuller.

Thanks again - Di

Thanks so much Tim! I will check those out this week! Your rock!

Wendy

Thanks again for your help with my search for plating solutions. I have been successful ordering the Earth solutions and am very pleased with them.  However, I also purchased an 'etching' rectifier which calls for silver nitrate to 'etch' fine silver and copper nitrate to 'etch' sterling containing copper. I don't think this process is really a traditional form of etching. My understanding is that the item to be 'etched' is placed in a steel pan, the power is connected and the copper is 'etched' from the piece and plated onto the steel pan.  Being new to this, my assumption is that the piece to be etched is in fact the anode and the metal is removed from the anode and deposited on the metal pan.  Does this make sense?

In any event, I cannot find silver nitrate or copper nitrate anywhere in Canada. I have tried stuller, gesswein, grobet, lacy's and anyone else I can find on google.  No luck.  I did find some through a photo store but they wanted a thousand dollars for 25 grams of the stuff.  Judging by the prices I see in the states that seemed exorbitant! Perhaps the grade is different? Anyway, What I am wondering is a) does anyone have any other suggestions re: where to source these materials, and     b)  is there an alternative solution that I might be able to use to perform this process on sterling given I am actually plating and not truly 'etching'? This has become almost a 'grail' type search! Thank you so much in advance for your time and thoughts,

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I've never etched sterling myself, I was going to try it a couple of years ago with nitric acid, but was never able to find any myself.  I did have an offer from a local bodyshop that worked with it to "lend" me a few ounces but I didn't get time to pursue it, and that was in Nebraska, sorry.  I think maybe big industrial places probably get it in 5 or 55 gallons drums, but you might have to search and beg for a little bit, but that would save shipping charges.  My only experience with etching has been with copper, and Lexi pretty much outlines the way I did it here...  http://www.jewelrymakingdaily.com/blogs/daily/archive/2011/08/22/ff...

If you can find any advice or help from that, I hope so, but just thought I'd send over the article FYI anyway and I attached a 2003 photo of a clockface that I did that way, just an example.  I checked online and there's a place in TO that carries cupric nitrate http://www.sculpturesupply.com/detail.php?id=240300&sf=subcateg..., which I saw in an article on http://www.mordent.com/etch-howto/ a year ago when I needed more plating advice (yeah, I have too many bookmarks on my browser, lol!).  Sorry I just have the bookmarks and info though, not real experience with etching with electricity and not with sterling at all.

Hope that helps, best of luck and success to you!

Tim

The clock face is beautiful Tim! I only hope for a result half as lovely! And again you rock because sculpture supply had it and I have ordered it already. THANK YOU!

Cool!  I just got an email this morning and thought right off I'd send you a link to the webview of it,,,,just more info that might or might be helpful....

sculpture supply Canada sell cupric nitrate.

Have you looked at New Horizons Scientific in Richmond, BC?

http://www.newhorizonsscientific.ca/chemistry.html

They supply chemicals and scientific stuff for schools and industry. Very nice people to deal with.

Wenda, I just googled these guys:  https://www.fishersci.ca/

Fisher Scientific is the name, they appear to be Canadian, and say they sell silver nitrate (among other noxious substances).

Regards,

Mary

It costs me haz-mat shipping charges, living in Newfoundland, but I order my etchants (ferric chloride for copper, brass, and bronze; and ferric nitrate for silver) from nymoc in Ontario.  Not sure about plating, I've never done it myself, so I'm not grasping how it relates to etching.  But nymoc has been good to me!
