Safety Requirements

Hello! I'm a beginner jewelry maker currently focused on sterling silver/ copper wire wrapped jewelry. This is mostly just a hobby, but I'd eventually like to make enough pieces to sell in local crafts fairs or potentially online. I'm wondering what kind of safety requirements need to be met to do this? For example, I know there are certain regulations regarding lead content in adult/children's jewelry that need to be met. As a beginning artist, how does one show that I'm using safe materials?…See More

As you may know the next issue of MAGazine will focus on enamelling and we are looking for resources. So post any information on enamel suppliers, kiln sources, favorite books - anything at all that might be of use to anyone who loves enamel, whether then are just starting out in the journey, or whether they have been on the road for a while!

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for getting in touch. I am a beginner in enamelling, but I know it is a process that I will be doing a lot more of... As a start, I have attached a photo of two pieces from my second year enamelling project at ACAD, Spring 2010, working with Dee Fontans. If this might be of use I can also provide the artists statement etc.

The pieces are called "The Kipper: Pre- and Post-mortem". Materials are fine silver, copper, sterling and cloisonné enamel. Photography credit is myself/the artist. These items are from "Something For The Weekend", a range of men's pendant ties, possibly amuletic, in precious metals and gems. The Kipper tie is an homage to the 1960's English menswear designer, Michael Fish, and his reactionary designs to dull male fashion. He is credited with launching the "Peacock Revolution" and I have a great picture of David Bowie wearing a Kipper!

Best wishes,

Christine Pedersen
