Safety Requirements

Hello! I'm a beginner jewelry maker currently focused on sterling silver/ copper wire wrapped jewelry. This is mostly just a hobby, but I'd eventually like to make enough pieces to sell in local crafts fairs or potentially online. I'm wondering what kind of safety requirements need to be met to do this? For example, I know there are certain regulations regarding lead content in adult/children's jewelry that need to be met. As a beginning artist, how does one show that I'm using safe materials?…See More

The International Colored Gemstone Association's magazine, INColor, has an online edition. Interestingly, they seem to do an "Ethical Mining and Fair Trade" feature article every month - each on different subjects.  You can read the online editions here: http://gemstone.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&...

This week's issue of NOW had a really interesting article on the "environmental focus" of last meeting of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.  I thought it was especially interesting that the current vice-president of the org (and president-to-be) is also the chief of the Missanabie Cree First Nation and an executive with Noront Resources, a company active in the Ring of Fire in northern Ontario.  Read the entire story here:

I wanted to add K. Jill Peters' message to the public board! Here it is:

A message from K. Jill Peters to all members of Ethical Metalsmiths Group on Metal Arts Guild of Canada!

hi there!
i wonder if you've heard of wild fish gems? they're an ethically run company based out of sri lanka. another big plus is that all their gemstones are certified untreated - no heat, no radiation, etc... to date i have ordered two stones from them and have been very happy with both :) you can check them out at
thanks for starting this great group!

I watched this just the other day, it really is incredible what they were able to document.

I am adding a link (see under Links, top category) to Ryan Taylor's documentary. Ryan recently opened the Fair Trade Jewellery company in Toronto. The documentary is a must-see and is truly inspiring.
