EZ Torch, Orca cleaning

Hey there!I'm a pretty new silver smith! I have just started up a little work bench of my own and I bought the EZ torch. It has been working really well the last few months, but this week the flame has started to surge and sputter. Tonight I was just about to anneal a piece of silver and I went to light the torch, It made a fire ball and the flames fell back running down the handle, I turned off both knobs but the flame didn't go out until I blew it out! so after I was sure the flame was out I…See More

Sorry I'm so terrible in getting back to you, will try the flickr button again, thanks. Will do my best to update you about BC stuff, I know it is late for your feature now. Still working my way around the MAG portfolio methods!

Hello Catherine,

I am loving the experience on your site and organization, and would like to say that you are doing a wonderful job, promoting and making so many artists known to the community that other wise would not be able to, not by themselves anyway.
So, I would like to say, thank you! :-)

Is the china paint you're buying dry or liquid...mine is powder and I use a paletter knife with different oils and mix them togeather..use a tile or sheet of glass. Different oils have different viscosities, so try different ones that might help the slush effect. I like lavender, the thinning oil from Thompson is good but stinky, the anise oil is slightly thicker. I also use the pallette knife to kind of "grind" the pigments into the oil make the mixture smoother more like a fine watercolour. check out Rynne china website..its for china painters, they have more oil options than thompson. I went to a china painters group, they were a wealth of knowledge, some had worked at wedgewood etc...amazing woman and artists! I don't know Bright Palladium. Yes thanks I'm a member of "G of G" hope that helps.

hi Catherine
Thanks so much for the kind words. Technic wise I use sifted enamels via stencil (thompson), some ceramic oxides, oxides pencils, graphite, and china paints...bit of everything. I'm teaching a class at Danaca Design is Seattle in the fall; haven't found anywhere to teach in the vancouver/victoria area. I order suppllies from both Thompson and Enamelwork Supply Co. (Coral Shaffer) in Seattle (206) 525-9271. I understand Greenbarn has some thompson supplies as well. I belong to the Seattel Metals guild, great group...had Jamie Bennet in for a class..was wonderful!

Hi Catherine
Thanks for you comments. I am going to add more photos when I have a minute. The flickr add button doesn't seem to be working for me. Also I will think about BC galleries, I actually don't sell in many places in BC but I will be able to come up with some names.

Actually I am hoping to teach some enamelling starting next year perhaps, depending on whether the equipment at the school I already teach at works. You might want to check out Selkirk College, then go to Kootenay School of the Arts. I think there is some one doing a champleve course this summer. Also check out Karin Marita Jones (website is same name I think) she used to teach enamelling in Vancouver.

Hi Catherine, I have been buying my enamelling supplies through a ceramic supply company called GreenBarn, it is just outside Vancouver, not quite sure what there area is called but they have a website. I also order from Thompson's Enamels, and have recently been experimenting with some japanese enamels through a supplier in Seattle. I can't remember her name right now but could find it out for you if you want. As far as workshops go, I went to a great workshop with Linda Darty this winter, but had to travel to the states to do so. I am not sure how many are offered in Canada, especially Vancouver area because there is no metals program associated with an University Fine Arts program here :(
