Safety Requirements

Hello! I'm a beginner jewelry maker currently focused on sterling silver/ copper wire wrapped jewelry. This is mostly just a hobby, but I'd eventually like to make enough pieces to sell in local crafts fairs or potentially online. I'm wondering what kind of safety requirements need to be met to do this? For example, I know there are certain regulations regarding lead content in adult/children's jewelry that need to be met. As a beginning artist, how does one show that I'm using safe materials?…See More

Artist

Biography

Chayle Cook is a Canadian artist from Ottawa, Ontario. She completed her BFA at NSCAD University (2010); specializing in jewellery, printmaking, and book arts. Her interdisciplinary approach to her studies has led to an art practice that balances her interest in the fine arts with her love of craft.

Since 2009 her work has shown in group and solo exhibitions in Canada. During 2013, Chayle's work has been part in 3 group exhibitions at TIJF (2013), a solo exhibition at The Ottawa Art Gallery (2013), and she completed a 6 month artist-in-residence at the Eesti Kunstiakadeemia (Department of Jewellery and Blacksmithing) in Tallinn, Estonia. She has been awarded Mejuri Jewellery's best-seller for her design "The Perfect Compliment" (2012). She currently is teaching introductory and intermediate jewellery courses at the Ottawa School of Art, and has begun her first jewellery collection and production company "Chayle Jewellery Studio", in Ottawa, Ontario.

Artist Statement

Influenced by the negative spaces between branches, and the curling and overlapping growth of lichen, I am interested in the geometric qualities and structured chaos within these natural forms. My work in jewellery, uses colour, contour, and layering to emphasize these types of forms and spaces. Edges and shadows describe, contain, and shape the spaces in my work-- revealing the spaces and the structures that hold them as the subject matter of my work.

The forms and aesthetic in my work have evolved away from natural representation. I have worked to distill the elements of these forms, searching for the chaotic happenstance of their growth patterns. My current work has become a playful exploration of form and improbable
geometry.
