Safety Requirements

Hello! I'm a beginner jewelry maker currently focused on sterling silver/ copper wire wrapped jewelry. This is mostly just a hobby, but I'd eventually like to make enough pieces to sell in local crafts fairs or potentially online. I'm wondering what kind of safety requirements need to be met to do this? For example, I know there are certain regulations regarding lead content in adult/children's jewelry that need to be met. As a beginning artist, how does one show that I'm using safe materials?…See More

Can anyone suggest a laser cutting service?  I would be willing to send the pieces further if I could find the right service.  I am cutting anodized aluminum and am having a very difficult time…Continue

Hey Pilar

I've been on sabbatical this year. I've spent a significant amount of time doing commission work, they seemed to come one after another. This has been good both for the refreshment of my bench skills and my bank account. I've made a couple of major tool purchases such as a stereo binocular microscope with a USB camera, a setters/engraving ball as well as paid for my flight to the Metal Museum in Memphis for a research residency in November with the proceeds. I've written a short article in the upcoming MAGazine about this experience, if you get this publication. Colleen and I spent a couple of weeks after Xmas in Zipolite Mexico which involved a lot of reading and hammock swinging. Since then I've been investigating the Arduino platform for a collaboration. I took a sensor workshop at Interaccess last weekend to further my electronic skills. I built a prototype for the collaborative project-"The Arduino Brained Bongo Board" pictured below and I'm going to build another more sophisticated prototype next. My brother in law Greg (the potter/ACAD prof) is coming to town for meetings next week and I will fly back to Calgary with him for ten days of skiing between March 10-21. I'm working on a PPT lecture to one of Laura's classes (she teaches at ACAD as well) in the morning on the 11th and taking a trip to the Canadian Museum of Making in the afternoon. I'm on the program committee for the 2013 SNAG conference so I'm engaged in research for potential speakers with Martha Glenny (GBC). I'm also writing a craft theory article related to my research in Memphis. Soooo...I'm keeping busy. ;-) KenIMG_0007.jpg
