RESONANCE

An Exhibition by the ÉCOLE DE JOAILLERIE DE MONTRÉAL

BRINGING TOGETHER THE WORKS OF 26 JEWELLERS

FROM OCTOBER 1st TO 31st 2015

Montreal, Wednesday September 16 2015 — The Canadian Guild of Crafts is proud to present RESONANCE, in partnership with the École de Joaillerie de Montréal, which will be held from October 1st to 31st. The exhibition will gather the works of twenty-six jewellers: Pilar Agueci, Gustavo Estrada, Monique Giroux, Camille Grenon, Émilie Guay-Charpentier, Christine Larochelle, Lynn Légaré, Marie-Eve Martin, Julie Mineau, Daniel Moisan, Pierre-Yves Paquette, Francesc Peich, Maxime Proulx, Lidia Raymond, France Roy, Antonio Serafino, Catherine Villeneuve, Denys Michaud, Ron Crawford, Anick Dusseault, Claudia Gravel, Catherine Lachapelle, Sylvie Langlois, Hélène Limoges, Angela Marzinotto and Garrett Johnson. In total, fourty-two pieces of jewellery and sculptures, created by thirteen teachers and thirteen graduates of the École de Joaillerie de Montréal will be presented in exclusivity. Each piece of work is the result of a close collaboration between one teacher and one graduate. This exhibition is part of the celebrations underlining the fortieth anniversary of this school. It provides an overview of forty years, like as many milestones throughout contemporary jewellery-making linked by close or by far to this unparalleled learning ground known as École de Joaillerie de Montréal. The exhibition will transport the visitor throughout classic and modern worlds, by showcasing eclectic and uncommon works!

The exhibition opening will take place Thursday, the first of October 2015, from 5 to 7 P.M. The artists will be present to meet and greet the public and media.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Some exhibitors will be present at the Guild, on Friday October 2nd, from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M., and on Saturday October 3rd, from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. in order to meet visitors and respond to their questions.

RESONANCE — STATEMENT

Resonance provokes a vibration, an energy that is transmitted from one person to another. Ideas either clash or they vibrate harmoniously. The initiators of this project wish to tackle, under the theme of Resonance, the question of the transmission of knowledge. The project underlying this exhibition is located at the level of the exchange between teacher and student, a relationship in which the student receives an enormous amount of information and also in which the teacher often comes out somewhat transformed. The fourteen teachers of the École de Joaillerie de Montréal participating in this exhibition all chose to team up with a student. Some crossed paths at the school many years ago, others more recently. Even if all have in common that they set foot in this school either to study or to teach, each person has followed very different paths, giving rise to discussions and to the effervescence of new ideas. Each duo worked to conceive new creations, by seeking inspiration through personal meanderings or by exploring themes and techniques that contribute to the exchange and sharing of knowledge. This teamwork allowed the jewellers to take up new challenges and to push back their own personal limits, whether in the creation/conception or in the production/technique processes.

L’ÉCOLE DE JOAILLERIE DE MONTRÉAL

Founded in the 1970s by Madeleine Dansereau, first Quebec female jeweller and Armand Brochard, another well-known jeweller who presided the Conseil des métiers d’art for more than twenty years, the École de joaillerie de Montréal satisfied an urgent need in the milieu: that of having guidance in the jewelry-making training process in Quebec. As early as 1973, the two pioneers united their efforts so as to provide a certain structure to the teaching of jewelry-making and to transmit as much of their knowledge as possible. Their first and foremost preoccupation was to allow for a space in which internationally renowned Canadian, American and European creators can exchange and share their respective experiences. They are the ones that trained the first generations of Quebec jewellers. Through their involvement and sustained efforts, they have contributed to the recognition of the jeweller’s status as artist, to the recognition of the quality and excellency of Quebec jewelry, to the dissemination of the art of jewelry-making and to the promotion of local Quebec jewellers.
