From 1985-1987, I participated in several group and performance art shows at the California Institute of the Arts. From 2006-2010, I participated in several group and solo shows on Denman Island, BC. I coordinated the group show "Interwoven Elementals" held at the Denman Art Gallery in 2010. I recently taught a metalweaving course with the Denman Island Community School students for the "Arts Afternoons" and the Denman Art Gallery student show. I also taught a metal weaving workshop at the Denman Art Centre for adults.
Actually, bronze is great to work with... it is between copper and brass as regards workability, and I use it a lot. Besides it's functional qualities, it has way more interesting cultural/historical connotations. Not sure where you get sheet metal out there... I end up buying 3' x 8' sheets of .032" (about 18-20 gauge) bronze from a company that usually sells it to builders and architects...
Always glad to see another patina junkie :D I am just heat colouring bronze, then sealing the surface with wax.
Yes, Don was at the Arts Centre... taught for a week. People lovely, he said.
We are going to be in Victoria again this summer. Don will be teaching a 1-week bookbinding course, and I'll be teaching 2 days on metal techniques that bookbinders can use to create book covers.
The organizers have asked me to see if there is a metal group on the Island that would be interested in having me teach something, to help them defray the costs of airfare. Any ideas about who I might talk with in Victoria or Denman?
